Investigating Gender-Based Discrimination
Unveiling the underlying mechanisms

The project is funded under the “HORIZON.4.1 – Widening participation and spreading excellence” programme.
About the project
Tackling gender-based violence with new policy
Gender-based discrimination (GBD) is a global issue affecting one in three women, which cuts across cultures and borders. The EU-funded UnveilGBD project aims to explore how globalisation intersects with the causes of violence against women using the social-ecological theory; through the links between cognitive functions, sexist beliefs and gender stereotypes, considering the ‘culture in mind’ framework. The study has four main goals: explore adherence to gender stereotypes, identify cognitive factors leading to stereotypical thinking, investigate models explaining these relationships, and compare cultural differences between Italy and Lithuania. The project aims to create an integrated model addressing gender stereotypes and will provide transformative policy recommendations for preventing GBD through an inclusive approach to gender equality.

About the research
There are several scientific models that have tried to explain the phenomenon of GBV and GBD. Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model applied to GBV allows us to explain violence on three levels: 1) microsystem, the personal characteristics of perpetrator and victim that may expose them to a greater risk of committing or being subjected to violence; 2) mesosystem, the characteristics pertaining to the community in which the relationship takes place; 3) exosystem, the characteristics pertaining to society in a broader sense. The research will address the problem of GBD within the exosystem by considering the characteristics of the microsystem and the mesosystem. Central to the research agenda are the factors—both individual and cultural—that exert influence over the adoption of GBD behaviours.
